Invitation
We would like to invite you to participate in our next, Twentieth
Annual Sydney Symposium of Social Psychology. This time the
Symposium will be held in Europe, outside Budapest, in Visegrad,
Hungary, on the 2-5th July 2018.
These meetings are held every year on a different topic, and bring
together leading international researchers in a major field of
social psychology (see
www.sydneysymposium.unsw.edu.au for details, programs,
pictures of past symposia, etc.). The Sydney Symposia have a
reputation of being among the most stimulating, enjoyable and fun
conferences in our field - feel free to check with past participants
(click here for a list). The topic of next year's symposium is
THE SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY OF GULLIBILITY
Aims
The conference seeks to bring together researchers who are
interested in understanding what social psychology can contribute to
our understanding of why people often tend believe and act on false
and misleading information, form incorrect judgments, and
misunderstand or misrepresent reality.
Several substantive areas of social psychology are highly relevant
to this topic, including research on evolutionary influences,
decision making processes, social influence processes, social
motivation, political psychology, relationship processes, affective
influences, economic psychology, dissonance mechanisms and
interpersonal dynamics, as well as many others. As always the topic
is broadly defined and we are interested in contribution from a wide
variety of empirical and theoretical backgrounds that can contribute
to understanding the social psychological reasons why gullibility
remains such an important feature of our lives.
Financial support
Our aim is to survey the latest developments in theory and empirical
research in this exciting and rapidly developing area. Given your
important contribution to this field, we really hope that you will
be able to participate. As with all previous Sydney Symposia, we are
able to offer a financial subsidy that will cover all the cost of
accommodation and meals for four days in a four-star hotel for the
duration of the Symposium. There may be a small extra charge for
single rooms, or sharing with spouses.
The location
The Hotel Visegrad http://www.hotelvisegrad.hu/en/ is a four star
hotel located close to Budapest, on the banks of the Danube, in a
spectacular and historic setting. The hotel has luxurious wellness
facilities, and an outstanding restaurant. Visegrad was Hungary’s
medieval capital in the 14th century and is the site of the ruins of
a renaissance palace and a 16th century citadel. The Symposium will
also feature some exciting social activities, including a sunset
cruise on the Danube, a Renaissance feast, castle visits, and
excursion to neighbouring scenic and historical attractions in the
Danube Bend area.
Publication
As in previous years, contributions to the Symposium will be
subsequently published in a book form by Psychology Press, New York.
Invited contributions should be first authors on the paper, and
normally present an overview of a significant area of research
emphasizing especially the latest theoretical and empirical
developments (the target word length for the eventual chapter is
6000 words, so it is a fairly concise project).
We very much hope that you will be able to come to Sydney next March. If you can accept our invitation, please -
- Indicate your acceptance or rejection of our invitation in the next few days; and please send us an abstract of your proposed paper within the next ten days.
- We will also need to receive an advance written draft of your contribution by the end of January 2018.
Thank you for considering this, and we look forward to hearing from you!
